Shawsheen Pottery got a brief mention in
Paul Evans' classic survey Art Pottery in the United States. Made in Mason City and marked with an
incised SP monogram.
|
An example of Shawsheen (upper left) in a
vintage issue of Keramic Studio Magazine. At right, two examples of
studio pottery by Lewis Anderson (ca. 1940s), of Iowa Falls.

Stoneware is Iowa's best-known clay
product, such as that made in Ft. Dodge. Artistic products by the Iowa
Art Clay Company are both more scarce and more affordable.

| In Ames, Iowa State College
(now University) students and ceramic faculty made and sold art pottery
under the direction of Paul Cox (previously at Newcomb College). |
There is a small handful of
avid collectors of the Iowa art pottery works. If you find something
made by one of these potters, please contact Mark Bassett. |
The Iowa Art Pottery Association (IAPA) is
a regional club, affiliated with the American Art Pottery Association
(AAPA), whose website is www.AmArtPot.org.

| The black/white archival
photograph shows students at ISC in the ceramic workshop. This pottery
is often marked ISC. Pieces by Mary Yancey are marked with a Y inside a
circle. |
Farr Pottery was made in
Oskaloosa from about 1907 until the mid teens. These scarce pieces are
usually hand-incised "Farr" (in script) and also dated. |
Besides stoneware, Iowa is also known for
novelty items made of sewer tile by concerns like Dickey Clay Company,
Leheigh, and What Cheer.
